GOB Introduces Tiered Bus Service Fares to Maintain Reliable and Accessible Transportation

Belmopan, April 21, 2026.

Following engagement with the Belize Bus Association (BBA), Cabinet has approved the introduction of a tiered fare adjustment for the National Highway public transportation sector.

This measure is aimed at maintaining consistent and reliable bus services across the country while ensuring that affordable national highway public transportation options remain available to commuters.

The system establishes three service categories:

  • Regular Service: up to $0.18 per mile
  • Express Service: up to $0.20 per mile
  • Premium Service (new, optional): up to $0.22 per mile

These per mile rates, when translated to respective fares, will be rounded to the nearest $0.25.

Regular and express services will continue as the primary options available to the public. The new premium service introduces an additional choice for commuters who prefer an upgraded travel option, without affecting the availability of standard services. The criteria for premium service are that buses are no older than seven years, must have air conditioning, comfortable and spacious bucket seats, free Wi-Fi, and operate non-stop between municipalities and major designated populated areas.

The Ministry will continue working with bus operators to guide implementation and ensure continuity of service nationwide.

These fares become effective on Friday, April 24, 2026, and will be published on or before midday Thursday, April 23, 2026, on our Ministry’s Facebook page at Min. Constitution & Religious Affairs, Indigenous Affairs & Transportation, and through local media outlets.
