Belmopan, August 22, 2026.
The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, through the Climate Change Department (CCD), announces that Belize’s Fifth National Climate Week officially commenced on Friday, August 21, 2026, with an opening ceremony at the Punta Gorda Sporting Complex in Punta Gorda Town.
The four-day event, which runs through Monday, August 24, 2026, began with a vibrant community parade and will continue with panel discussions, interactive activities, and exhibition booths each day. Climate Week provides a space for Belizeans to learn, share ideas, and engage with practical climate solutions. All interested members of the public are warmly invited to participate.
Held under the theme, “Where Innovation Meets Impact: Driving Resilience, Scaling Technology, and Expanding Inclusion in Climate Action,” Climate Week opened with a keynote address by the Prime Minister of Belize, Hon. John Briceño, and will feature a dynamic series of events, including:
- Day 2: Orange Economy and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Segment
- Day 3: Forest and Agriculture Showcase
- Day 4: Blue Spaces and Technology Showcase
Climate Week 2026 aims to raise awareness about the evolution of climate policy in Belize, with emphasis on the Climate Change and Carbon Market Initiatives Act 2026. The launch of this Act is integral to the next phase of advancing Belize’s Climate Agenda, as highlighted in Hon. Orlando Habet’s remarks:
“The government is putting the foundations in place, strengthening the legal framework, turning national commitments into investment priorities, improving the information on which decisions are made, bringing resilience into the sectors and communities where it matters, strengthening Belize’s ability to access finance and technology and making sure that Belize has a voice where decisions affecting our future are being made.”
The event will also amplify the voices and leadership of women, Indigenous people, and youth in climate decision-making, promoting inclusive engagement as key pillars of climate resilience.
As highlighted by CEO Milagro Matus, hosting the event in the Toledo district was an intentional choice for the Climate Change Department:
“Climate action is now part of national development, part of how we grow our food, manage our waste, protect our forests and seas, build our homes, strengthen our economy, and prepare for the future. There is perhaps no better place for this preparation for resilience conversation to continue than Toledo, where traditional knowledge and modern innovation meet and reinforce one another.”
Throughout the week, informational and interactive booths representing government agencies, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and business enterprises will be available on-site, fostering engagement and collaboration among participants.
