Belmopan, October 28, 2025.
The Office of the Prime Minister and Ministry of Investment, through its Investment Policy and Compliance Unit (IPCU), in collaboration with the Taiwan Technical Mission and the Ministry of Human Development, Family Support & Gender Affairs, launched a training titled “Cell Phone Repair Training for Women in the Stann Creek District” on October 27, 2025, in Dangriga Town.
The objective of the training is to provide self-employment opportunities to participants from Dangriga and surrounding communities. It is being implemented because there is a need for technicians skilled in the upkeep, cleaning, maintenance, and repair of cell phones. There is currently no formal training course of this kind in southern Belize, and cell phone repair services are lacking in various parts of the country.
The IPCU started the cell phone repair training program as a pilot project for women in the Corozal and Orange Walk Districts in 2024. The skills training has enhanced women’s opportunities to generate additional income from home by repairing cell phones, which are among the main devices used by content creators in the Orange Economy. From the success of the pilot project, the IPCU submitted its proposal to the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), through the Taiwan Technical Mission, to expand the training to other parts of the country.
The Ministry of Investment aims to diversify export-led economic activity in the Stann Creek District by enhancing citizens’ skills and entrepreneurial spirit, especially in growth sectors such as the Orange Economy.
Present at the opening of the training were Hon. Thea Garcia-Ramirez, Minister, Ministry of Human Development, Family Support & Gender Affairs; Robert Mariano, Mayor of the Dangriga Town Council; Debbie Jones; Dr. Hon. Louis Zabaneh, Minister of Constitution and Religious Affairs, Indigenous Affairs and Transportation; Mr. Andrew Su, Chief of the Taiwan Technical Mission, in Belize; Mr. Lincoln Blake, Director, Investment Policy and Compliance Unit; and Mr. Abisur Quintal, Instructor, Jarvis Fix.
