Belmopan, October 14, 2025.
On the margins of the 2025 World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings, the Government of Belize signed a loan agreement with the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development to finance the upgrading of an 18-mile section of the George Price Highway between the City of Belmopan and La Democracia.
The agreement, valued at US$12.5 million, will support critical infrastructural enhancements to one of Belize’s most important transportation corridors. The project includes the construction of new service lanes, the upgrading of existing bridges, and the addition of 16 bus stop lanes aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and connectivity for trade.
This latest agreement further strengthens the longstanding partnership between Belize and the State of Kuwait, which dates back to the 1990s. Over the years, the Kuwait Fund has supported several major infrastructure projects in Belize, including the development of the Southern Highway, the Hummingbird Highway, and the Caracol Road.
Signing on behalf of the Government of Belize was Mr. Joseph Waight, Financial Secretary and Head of Delegation to the 2025 World Bank/IMF Meetings, and Mr. Waleed Sh. Al-Bahar, Acting Director General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.
The Government of Belize expresses its appreciation to the Kuwait Fund for its continued partnership and support toward advancing Belize’s national infrastructure and sustainable development goals.
