Belmopan. March 26, 2019. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, Sustainable Development and Immigration through the National Climate Change Office has partnered with the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) to facilitate a workshop today March 26th, 2019, at the George Price Centre for Peace and Development in Belmopan, Belize.
The objectives of this workshop are (1) to identify gaps and challenges relating to monitoring, reporting and verifying climate change actions nationally, and (2) to identify and prioritize capacity building activities to overcome identified challenges. It is expected that this session will provide inputs that will contribute to the development of a National Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) System for climate change and transparency-related capacity building needs in Belize.
To effectively implement the Paris Agreement, both developed and developing countries should be equipped with national MRV Systems. These systems are geared towards the tracking of national greenhouse gas emission levels, the tracking of climate finance flows received, and the monitoring of climate change actions implemented nationally. An MRV system also facilitates the sharing of information and lessons learned and allow assessing whether set targets have been achieved. This creates transparency and shows the continuity of a country’s actions, which internationally strengthens the trust of climate finance donors and other investors.
The Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) is a neutral multi-donor fund that is managed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and provides policymakers around the world with tools and support to measure and assess the effects of their climate action.
