Security Forces Collaborate to Address Marine Security Concerns

Belmopan, August 16, 2022. 5:10 p.m.

In an effort to address the recent reports of robbery of fishermen, particularly in the southern waters off the coast of the Stann Creek District, the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security is facilitating a series of strategic and operational actions to address the security concerns of those affected.

A collaborative effort with other government enforcement agencies is being undertaken to determine the root causes of these sporadic acts and threats of violence among our fisherfolks. Therefore, this strategic approach will explore policies and determine legislation that may be necessary to address these security concerns. Simultaneously, the Belize Coast Guard has been tasked with conducting operations in the area of interest to address the immediate safety and security concerns of the fisherfolks operating in those areas with a view to deter and interdict any act of robbery or aggression.

The Ministry of National Defence and Border Security acknowledges the significant contribution that the fishing industry makes to our national economy and holds in high regard the livelihood of our fisherfolks.
