Replacement of Mile Markers

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) has commenced replacement of its mile marker signs along the 77 miles of the George Price Highway. The public is informed that although replacement of mile markers along the George Price Highway commences from its historical starting point at the Supreme Court Building in Belize City, the realignments done on the roadway over the years will undoubtedly affect the replacement location of the mile markers signs.

The MIDH further informs that replacement of these mile markers is a necessary and periodic exercise undertaken by the ministry for the benefits they will provide to motorists and our partners in the emergency response community. The mile markers signs will serve motorists, law enforcement, emergency responders and MIDH maintenance crews in more accurate location identification and reporting of collisions and reporting of disaster and maintenance activities on highways.

The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the established national guidelines for traffic applications in Belize, allows for the reference markers to be placed more frequently than the one-mile intervals as is customary in Belize; however, after much deliberations, the MIDH has decided to continue the established practice of placing these signs at one-mile intervals since it is the most adequate and cost-effective way to implement the mile markers.

The MIDH notifies the public that replacement of mile marker signs will be an ongoing process to be implemented over the next couple of months along all major highways and village roads.

The benefits to be gained by all motorists, law enforcement and emergency and MIDH personnel cannot be overstated.
