Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño paid an official visit to the Republic of Honduras on Monday, August 24, 2026, where he met with H.E. Nasry Asfura, President of the Republic of Honduras, at the Presidential House in Tegucigalpa to discuss opportunities to further strengthen bilateral relations and regional cooperation.
The leaders discussed matters of mutual interest, including health, security, trade, regional integration, climate change, and connectivity. They reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation and advancing practical initiatives that benefit the peoples of Belize and Honduras.
Prime Minister Briceño highlighted opportunities to expand bilateral trade and investment, including through the possibility of pursuing a trade agreement between Belize and Honduras. He noted that Belize’s existing trade arrangements with Guatemala and its recently signed Partial Scope Agreement with El Salvador position Honduras as an important potential partner in Belize’s continued economic integration with Central America.
The two leaders also emphasised the importance of strengthened security cooperation and information sharing to address shared challenges, including drug trafficking and other transnational threats. Opportunities for greater cooperation in health were also discussed.
Prime Minister Briceño underscored Belize’s commitment to strengthening its engagement with Central America while maintaining its historic Caribbean identity and connections. As Belize holds the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Central American Integration System (SICA) for the second half of 2026, he reaffirmed Belize’s intention to advance regional integration and cooperation on matters of common interest.
The leaders also discussed regional air connectivity, including Belize’s participation in initiatives associated with the Central American Corporation for Air Navigation Services (COCESNA), as well as opportunities to improve connectivity and facilitate greater movement of people and goods between Central America and the Caribbean.
Prime Minister Briceño welcomed the opportunity to strengthen the longstanding bonds of friendship between Belize and Honduras, including the close people-to-people ties reflected in the significant Honduran community in Belize.
The Belizean delegation included Hon. Kevin Bernard, Minister of Health and Wellness; Mrs. Narda García, Chief Executive Officer in the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministries of Investment and Civil Aviation; Ambassador Oscar Arnold, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade; Dr. Julio Sabido, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Health and Wellness; and Mr. Richard C. Vinelli Reisman, Honorary Consul of Belize in Tegucigalpa.
