Belmopan, April 23, 2026.
The Governments of Belize and Mexico have launched phase two of the Sembrando Vida project in Belize. The launch took place in the village of San Narciso, in the Corozal District, during a ceremony hosted by Hon. Ramiro Ramirez, Minister of State in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, and Area Representative for Corozal Southwest. Also present at the ceremony were H.E. Ana Luisa Vallejo Barba, Ambassador of Mexico to Belize; Servulo Baeza, CEO in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries; and Maestra Alejandra del Moral Vela, Executive Director of the Agencia Mexicana de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AMEXCID), along with other officials of AMEXCID and Sembrando Vida.
AMEXCID is an agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico. Its primary function is to coordinate, implement, and evaluate Mexico’s international cooperation policies, acting both as a provider and recipient of technical, scientific, and educational assistance to promote sustainable development. The agency operates the Sembrando Vida project in several countries, including Belize.
The second phase of Sembrando Vida stems from commitments made by the Governments of Mexico and Belize, signed on May 7, 2022, during a visit by then Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to Belize. The first phase of the project was launched in June 2023, benefiting approximately 2,000 small farmers. The goals of the Sembrando Vida project include sustainability and resilience in agriculture, as well as improving the livelihoods of small farmers by involving them in programs and projects that promote self-reliance in food security, rebuild rural communities’ social networks, and restore the environment.
Sembrando Vida is proof that Belize and Mexico share similar goals, including bilateral and technical co-operation in areas of mutual interest, such as boosting socio-economic development and promoting economic programs in sectors like agriculture.
Following the launch ceremony, farmer beneficiaries in attendance participated in the registration process at the San Narciso Ramiro Ramirez Auditorium.
