Belmopan. January 26, 2021. 3:25 p.m.

Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño today officially signed an order convening a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the sale of Government assets between the period October 2019 to November 2020.

The three-member Commission includes Chairman E. Andrew Marshalleck, S.C. along with Public Service Union representative, Luke Martinez, and Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry representative, Marcello Blake.

The Commission has been tasked with investigating the procedures and processes for the sale of assets by the previous administration to determine whether proper procedures, practices and applicable rules and regulations were duly observed and to determine if there were improprieties, irregularities or wrongdoings in the sale of the assets. If the Commission finds fraud, corruption, mismanagement, waste or abuse, it will identify those responsible with a view to the subsequent pursuit of criminal or civil action and/or recovering the assets.

The Prime Minister has directed that the meetings be held in public. The dates and venues for the meetings decided by the Commission will be published.

The Government of Belize is committed to service with integrity and transparency. The Government’s assets are the people’s assets and must be handled responsibly and in their best interests.
