Belmopan, August 17, 2026.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness reminds the public that the rainy season increases the risk of dengue transmission. Dengue is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in stagnant water commonly found in containers around homes and communities.
Dengue can cause mild to severe illness and, in some cases, can be fatal. Common symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, skin rash, and, in severe cases, bleeding or difficulty breathing. The Ministry urges residents to seek medical attention immediately if you are experiencing symptoms.
Dengue prevention is a shared responsibility. Checking homes, yards, workplaces, and communities for mosquito breeding sites can significantly reduce the risk of dengue transmission. Residents should take the following preventive measures:
- Empty, cover, or remove containers that collect water around homes and businesses.
- Remove discarded containers, tires, bottles, cans, and other items that can collect rainwater.
- Keep drains, yards, vacant lots, and surroundings free of excessive vegetation, garbage, and debris.
- Use mosquito repellents as directed.
- Wear long-sleeved clothing, particularly during the early morning and late afternoon when mosquitoes are most active.
- Ensure doors and windows are properly screened to prevent mosquito entry.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness continues to work closely with communities, local authorities, and partners to strengthen surveillance and vector control activities throughout the country.
