Ministers in the Ministry of Human Development Meet with BAPDA Representatives

On Monday, January 25, 2021, members of the Belize Assembly for Persons with Diverse Abilities (BAPDA) paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs in Belmopan.

The BAPDA representatives met with Hon. Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Minister of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs; Hon. Gilroy Usher, Minister of State in the Ministry; and Mrs. Tanya Santos Neal, Chief Executive Officer, and presented an update on their functions and programs as a coordinating umbrella organization for persons with diverse abilities. Several matters of concern were discussed including the effects of COVID-19, considerations in improving building access, necessary legislative amendments and fulfilment of obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Plans were also discussed to shortly establish the Disabilities Desk within the Ministry for greater advocacy and collaboration.

The representatives expressed great appreciation for the opportunity to meet with the ministers and CEO, and vowed to work closely with the Ministry to address challenges faced by persons with diverse abilities.
