Minister of Local Government Meets with Newly Elected Punta Gorda Town Council

Belmopan, March 10, 2021. 5:30 p.m. 

On Tuesday, March 9, 2021, Hon. Oscar Requena, Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government along with Mr. Valentino Shal, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry, held a meeting with the newly elected Punta Gorda Town Council. The purpose of the meeting was for the Ministry and the Council to identify potential areas of collaboration in order to improve the delivery of services to Punta Gorda residents.

His Worship Mayor Charles Selgado along with the councillors presented on the town’s infrastructure which has long been neglected and the weak state of the finances of the Council found upon assuming office. The new Council also shared their plans to address these issues and improve the governance of their municipality. The Ministry shared with the Mayor and the Council ongoing projects under the Ministry in which they have an opportunity to participate. These include improving financial management mechanisms, redefinition of municipality boundaries and an integrated motor vehicle licensing system.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Minister and Mayor visited various neighbourhoods to get a first-hand look at the state of the town’s infrastructure and services which need urgent improvement.
