Government of Belize Retains Executive Power after Dissolution of National Assembly

Today, October 5, 2020, the Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow advised the Governor General to dissolve the National Assembly on October 6, 2020. The Prime Minister also advised the Governor General that General Elections be held on November 11, 2020.

The Office of the Prime Minister reminds the public that, in accordance with section 84(6) of the Belize Constitution quoted below, the Government of Belize will continue to be governed by its current executives including the Prime Minister and other Ministers until the appointment of a new Prime Minister after General Elections.

Section 84(6) of the Belize Constitution reads, “During the period between the dissolution of the National Assembly and the appointment of a Prime Minister after a general election, the government of Belize shall continue to be administered by the Prime Minister and the other Ministers and Ministers of State of the Government.”
