Government of Belize Mourns Passing of Honourable Justice Cecil Morrison

Belmopan, February 7, 2024.

The Government of Belize has received, with profound sadness and regret, news of the passing of the eminent Caribbean jurist, Justice Cecil Dennis Morrison (Retd) O.J., C.D., K.C.

Justice Morrison brought tremendous acuity, courtesy and scholarship to the Belize Court of Appeal during his tenure from 2004 to 2015.

Attorney General Hon. Anthony Sylvestre remarked, “Justice Morrison was the quintessential judge and advocate, beloved by a legion of law students across the Commonwealth Caribbean as well as by young judges who hailed him as a role model. He humanized whichever court he happened to sit on. The region has lost a legal giant.”

Belizean lawyers fondly recall that Justice Morrison would regularly host dinners at his house, especially for Belizean law students studying at the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica. He was fond of his adopted country Belize and of Belizeans.

Hon. Justice Morrison was a Rhodes Scholar who was called to the Jamaican Bar in 1975. He continued his legal career in private practice for another 25 years. He served as a lecturer at the Norman Manley Law School and Chairman of the Council of Legal Education from 1998 to 2004.

The Government and people of Belize extend condolences to his wife, Mrs. Janet Morrison, his children and his extended family. Honourable Justice Cecil Dennis Morrison will always be remembered as a brilliant and devoted jurist, but above all, a beautiful human being.
