GOB Signs Consent Agreements with Jalacte and San Vicente for Hybrid Micro-Grid Solar PV System

Belmopan, February 28, 2024.

On February 24, the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics & E-Governance signed consent agreements with the villages of Jalacte and San Vicente to develop a hybrid micro-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) system. This initiative marks significant progress toward providing reliable and affordable power to 226 households in these villages. Under the leadership of Mr. Jose Urbina, Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics & E-Governance, and Hon. Oscar Requena, Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labor, and Local Government, the consent agreements were formalized, paving the way for implementing the generation system.

The Hybrid Micro-Grid Solar PV System will be designed and implemented in Jalacte Village but will serve residents in both Jalacte and San Vicente villages. With an estimated capacity of 200 kilowatt-peak (kWp), the system is expected to significantly enhance access to electricity for the communities involved.

This signing follows the recent agreement with San Benito Poite in January, making it the third community this year to join the Energy Access Project. The collaboration between the Government of Belize, the European Union Development Fund, and Belize Electricity Limited underscores a commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.

The Energy Access Project aims to catalyze growth across key sectors, including education, agriculture, and healthcare, thereby advancing the sustainable development of Belize. Through expanded access to reliable and affordable energy services, this program expects to unlock economic, social, and environmental benefits for citizens and communities.
