Expulsion Order Issued for Deportation of Guatemalan Fugitive

Belmopan, September 17, 2021. 12:55 p.m.

Acting on credible information received from the Belize Police Department, Hon. Eamon Courtenay, Minister with responsibility for Immigration, today signed an Expulsion Order directing that Alfonso Bulux Vicente be detained and deported from Belize.

Bulux Vicente is wanted in Guatemala in connection with an incident that occurred in December 1982 in the village of Dos Eres, Guatemala, in which 250 villagers were massacred at the hands of the Guatemalan Kaibiles.

Bulux Vicente applied to the Ministry of Immigration for permanent residence, and in August 2021, the ministry requested the Belize Police Department to conduct a security clearance on Bulux Vicente. As a result of routine checks, an INTERPOL Red Notice was discovered relating to Bulux Vicente. Guatemalan counterparts confirmed to the Belize Police Department that Bulux Vicente was wanted for murder. Bulux Vicente was detained by the police and remains in custody.

As a result of the Expulsion Order, Bulux Vicente will now be escorted to the Belize – Guatemala border and handed over to Guatemalan authorities. The Expulsion Order also bars Bulux Vicente from ever entering Belize again.
