Climate Finance Unit Engages the NAP Global Network’s Country Support Hub as New Funding Agency

Belmopan. May 18, 2022. 9:50 a.m.

As the Green Climate Fund’s (GCF) National Designated Authority for Belize, the Ministry of Economic Development and the Climate Finance Unit have engaged the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Global Network – an initiative hosted by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) with funding provided by Irish Aid.

The NAP Global Network’s Country Support Hub provides up to US$30,000 in technical assistance under a window to respond to requests focused on monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) for national adaptation plans.

On February 22, 2022, Mr. Leroy Martinez, Economist/GCF Focal Point, Ministry of Economic Development, met virtually with Mr. Alec Crawford, Senior Policy Advisor at IISD, and Mr. Christian Ledwell, Policy Advisor and Manager, NAP Global Network. During this initial meeting, Mr. Martinez informed the IISD team that the Government of Belize was interested in accessing technical assistance to complement the Fisheries and Coastal NAP approved by the GCF. This US$600,000 NAP will set the stage for additional large-scale actions to address climate change impacts in both sectors.

An official concept note was submitted by the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, requesting technical assistance from the NAP Global Network for a vulnerability and livelihood assessment of two coastal communities, namely Placencia Village and Caye Caulker.

Dr. Osmond Martinez, CEO in the Ministry of Economic Development and the National Designated Authority to the GCF, emphasized the importance of this technical support and was delighted that the concept note was approved within a short time frame.

Dr. Martinez thanked CEO Ms. Kennedy Carillo, Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation; Mr. Jeffy Gomez, Fisheries and Coastal NAP Project Coordinator; Mrs. Vivian Ramnarace, NAP GN Focal Point, Fisheries Department; Ms. Hunter Hales, Proposal Development Officer, Ministry of Economic Development.
