Belize Targets Lower Trade Costs and Expanded Export Opportunities Following WTO Mission

Belmopan, November 6, 2026.

Belize is taking steps to turn the findings of its latest World Trade Organization (WTO) Trade Policy Review into practical improvements aimed at reducing trade costs, strengthening local businesses, and expanding export opportunities.

From November 3 to 5, 2026, the Government of Belize, through the Directorate General for Foreign Trade, hosted a WTO follow-up mission in Belmopan, bringing together government agencies, private-sector representatives, and development partners.

Building on Belize’s fourth WTO Trade Policy Review in May 2026, the mission identified priorities for technical assistance, institutional strengthening, and future investment in Belize’s trade infrastructure.

Among the priorities identified was a potential second phase of Belize’s Electronic Single Window for Trade, aimed at building on the ongoing implementation of the national platform to further simplify trade procedures, improve coordination among regulatory agencies, and reduce the time and cost of doing business.

Other priorities included strengthening customs and border management, improving standards and certification services, and enhancing the capacity of Belizean businesses to access international markets.

These priorities will help guide future engagement with development partners to mobilize resources, modernize Belize’s trade systems, and support greater competitiveness, investment, and economic growth.

The Government of Belize thanks the WTO and participating stakeholders for their continued partnership in advancing Belize’s trade and development priorities.
