Belize Hosts Second Regional Environmental Congress of CCAD

Belmopan, April 20, 2023. 

Belize, as President Pro-tempore under the Central American Integration System (SICA), hosted the Second Regional Environmental Congress of the Central American Commission on the Environment and Development (CCAD) at the Ramada Hotel in Belize City. The event was held under the theme, “Interregional Unity: Enhancing Human Security and Environmental Resilience.”

Hon. Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, presented the inaugural address and participated in a panel with other ministers of CCAD member countries on April 19. Minister Habet addressed the actions that the Government of Belize has taken to improve human security and environmental resilience.

The congress continued on April 20 with the presentation of the results of the main regional initiatives, programs, and projects that CCAD and its strategic and cooperation partners are implementing for the sound management and protection of natural resources in Central America and the Dominican Republic. The presentation also focused on the promotion of the exchange of information, experiences, lessons learned, knowledge management and South-South and Triangular Cooperation on the region’s main environmental issues.

Belize led presentations on Belize’s Blue Loan Agreement and the contributions of the Mesoamerican Reef Ecoregion Integrated Watershed-to-Reef Management (MAR2R) project in the integrated management of water resources. Belize also opened presentations on Water Management with a Watershed-to-Sea Approach and on Circular Economy – Plastic Pollution and Plan for Marine Litter.
