Belize Coast Guard Conduct Successful Search and Rescue

Belmopan. November 26, 2020. 5:50 p.m. 

On November 26, 2020, at around 11:00 a.m. a Belize Coast Guard (BCG) vessel along with two BCG members, two police officers, and one officer from Scenes of Crime departed the BCG headquarters en-route to Turneffe Atoll in response to a call of a drowning at Turneffe Island Resort.

At 11:30 a.m. the vessel commander on board reported to headquarters that the vessel was taking in water. The vessel’s last known position was in the Belize City harbor.

An all-out search was launched including multiple surface assets from the BCG. Air assets from the Belize Defence Force, Astrum Helicopters, and Maya Island Air also conducted air surveillance.

The five personnel were located and rescued in the Belize City harbor at approximately 2:15 p.m. and are currently at the BCG headquarters being assessed by medical personnel.
