Belmopan, June 26, 2026.
The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, with the support of the European Union (EU), Euroclima, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is convening a two-day stakeholder consultation workshop to advance the development of Belize’s Climate Change and Carbon Market Policy. This policy will serve as the national framework to operationalize the Climate Change and Carbon Market Initiatives Act, 2026.
Belize is taking a phased approach to carbon market engagement. With the Act now in place as the legal foundation, the Carbon Market Policy will provide strategic direction, to be followed by supporting regulations, standards, and systems. The workshop, held June 24 and 25 in Belmopan, marks an early and critical step in that process, bringing together government, civil society, the private sector, academia, and communities to review the situational analysis and opportunity assessment, and to ensure the policy is grounded in Belize’s national realities.
Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, Hon. Orlando Habet, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to an inclusive process:
“Belize’s approach to carbon markets will be built on broad consultation and national ownership, one that reflects our priorities, protects our people and ecosystems, and positions Belize to benefit from climate finance on our own terms.”
Chief Climate Change Officer Mrs. Edalmi Pinelo echoed that commitment: “This is a collective process. We are here to listen, and the feedback gathered will inform every stage of policy development.”
The Ministry will continue engaging stakeholders through further consultations and technical working groups as the draft policy is developed.
