Belize Engages with Universal Periodic Review Process

Geneva, February 2, 2024.

Today, Belize adopted its fourth report under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism before the Human Rights Council at the United Nations in Geneva.

A delegation led by Hon. Elvia Vega Samos, Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, presented Belize’s progress, challenges, and successes in implementing recommendations accepted during the third cycle of the UPR, which was completed in 2018. In this fourth cycle, Belize received a total of 166 recommendations aimed at furthering human rights improvements. Belize has opted not to take a position on these recommendations at this time but is committed to conducting a thorough review and engaging all relevant stakeholders at the national level. The outcomes of these deliberations, including decisions on which recommendations Belize will accept for implementation over the next five years, will be communicated to the council before the next session of the UPR Working Group.

The Government of Belize remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing the well-being of all living in Belize and will continue its efforts to improve human rights in the country.
