Belize and Guatemala Hold Discussions on Product Transit

Belmopan, March 20, 2026.

Hon. Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries, accompanied by Mr. Francisco Gutierrez, Technical Director of Plant Health for the Belize Agricultural Health Authority, and Mr. Fermin Blanco, OIRSA Representative in Belize, have held discussions with their Guatemalan counterparts from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food, to discuss Belizean products passing through Guatemala in transit to El Salvador, in connection with the partial scope agreement to be signed between Belize and El Salvador.

Discussions during the meeting focused on the transportation of sealed containers of agricultural goods and products to El Salvador through Guatemala, in anticipation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will be signed by the end of April between the Ministry of Agriculture of Belize and the Government of El Salvador, through its Ambassador in Belize, with regard to the products that will be destined for El Salvador.

Discussions were cordial and have prepared the way for the eventual transit of goods through Guatemala. The discussions follow intense lobbying through the Ministry of Agriculture for additional markets abroad for Belizean products. El Salvador is one of Belize’s neighbouring countries that imports much of their food products, and discussions on markets for Belizean food products in El Salvador have been very productive so far.
