Belize and El Salvador reaffirmed their close bilateral relationship this week, with high-level engagements in San Salvador covering regional integration and practical cooperation across a wide range of areas.
On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, Ambassador Oscar Arnold, Chief Executive Officer for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, joined colleagues from across the Central American Integration System (SICA) in welcoming Ambassador Lina Ajoy as she assumed the mandate of the new SICA Secretary-General.
H.E. Lou-Anne Burns Martinez, Belize’s Ambassador to El Salvador, and H.E. Amalia Mai, Coordinator of Belize’s Presidency Pro Tempore and Belize’s Ambassador to Mexico, also formed part of the delegation. The event reaffirmed Belize’s commitment to regional integration that delivers tangible results for the people of Central America.
On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the Third Belize-El Salvador Binational Commission was held in San Salvador. Adriana Mira, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, led the Salvadoran delegation, while Ambassador Oscar Arnold led Belize’s delegation.
The Binational Commission provided an important platform to strengthen bilateral relations and identify new areas of practical cooperation. Discussions focused on trade, regional integration, defence and security, migration, health, agriculture, education, and tourism.
Ambassador Arnold was joined by Ambassador Alfonso Gahona, Director of International Affairs, and Ms. Tricia Gideon, Deputy Director General for Trade, alongside other senior officials. The Belizean delegation was further supported by virtual interventions from the Ministries of Tourism, Immigration, Agriculture, and Education, ensuring a broad, whole-of-government engagement.
